When I first cam to Sweden 18 years ago, people would often ask what I do for a living.
Every time I would give them the same answer” I am a Ballroom and Latin American dancer and dance teacher”.
The next question they all asked was:
whats that ?
Today things are very different.
Now I say Sports dance teacher and Judge and every body knows what it is.
There are always positive and negative consequences of all situations and this positive change,in my opinion, is due 100% to programms like Lets Dance.
The publics awareness of what it takes to become a sports dancer has changed drasticaly.
Now we are seen as a serious activity which can give the participant more than your avaerage sport.
We are a team-2 peoeple (the smallest possible team)
We compete regardless of age. How many other sports offer this oppurtunity?
We compete with men and women on the same team . How often does this happen in other sports?
Not only do we have the sports side ,we also have the artistic side. How many other sports have this?
We develope the participants social skills and give them a physical activity which they can do the rest of their lives. How many other sports do that?
But there are always 2 sides to the coin.
This development, this change in awareness ,that the general public has towards dancing has meant that certain
changes have been made in our approach to how the dances should be seen. So that they can be used and taught in
these TV programms .
In other words:
We allow lifts. In a normal competition this would never be allowed in 10 dance or Bugg.
The expectations for the technical requirements has been adjusted to suit the requirements of a show so that the
participnats result is based an what we can honestly expect them to achieve during their period of training in the
respective show.
i.e
I can not expect the contestants in Lets Dance to perform the Cha Cha the same way as I would expect the Swedish
champions -Veera and Stefano to perform this dance . It would be a rediculous.
So expectations and adjustment are made to accomodate the show.
This means that a 10 in the show is perfect for Lets Dance But in reality things would be just a little bit different.
So now, to all you Bugg and Salsa perfectionists out there Iwould like to say:
I feel that giving the 10 last night in Bugg was as acceptable as giving Molly a 10 last week for her Slow Foxtrot.
The strangest thing is that some people write in with comments about the Bugg and I must say that
I do have a judging licence for bugg through SDR. I realise there are different styles, but lets face it.
The growing popularity in most dance disciplines has been superb however the least popular and the one that in
most dance schools, clubs and competitions is becoming smaller ,is Bugg.
So instead of being so bloody negative towards the Bugg in the show.
Shut up .Take the chance and do what the rest of us have done . Bite the Bullet.
10 Dance is growing in all ages.
Disco is growing.( There is a competition coming up in Järfälla with 900 entries)
Street dance is growing.
But ,Bugg is on the decline.( as a competition form and especially amongst children)
Try figuring out where your going wrong before you start to comment on the show.
Maybe all the ” developments” in Bugg that people have written about where not for the best for the danicng.
I do not know
But I do know this.
Boundries have been moved and its working so shut up and stop complaining.
